In Costume, Out of Character: Cool Behind-the-Scenes Pics

"What's our motivation?"

"Hooray for Hollywood! That phoney, super coney Hollywood! They come from Chillicothes and Padukahs with their bazookas to get their names up in lights! All armed with photos from local rotos with their hair in ribbons and legs in tights!" - Doris Day, Hooray for Hollywood

I don't know about you, but I always find it super cool to look at behind-the-scenes photos of actors in costume while out of character. For example, the villain sharing a hug and a laugh with the hero isn't something you'd ever expect to see, in-universe. We all know that actors aren't their characters; the makeup, wigs, masks, and costumes are simply their uniforms while on stage or set. As such, a photo of the "hero" enjoying a beer with the "villain" is no different than spotting a pair of uniformed McDonald's employees hanging out together during their break. Therefore, as a creative writing exercise, I have fun envisioning different in-universe scenarios around such pics, which is what this page is for. As is now the new norm around here, I'll share any new ones I come across in reverse-chronological order. All right. Lights! Camera! Action!

Reality: Josh Pais and Judith Hoag Posing for a Photo During Production of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1989

My Imagined Scenario: When things don't work out with Casey Jones, April O'Neil begins dating Raphael. After catching a late-night showing of Critters 2: The Main Course, the couple spot a coin-operated photo booth in the cinema's lobby and step inside for a romantic picture together.

Reality: Emilia Holliday and Owen Cooper Filming Adolescence in 2024

My Imagined Scenario: In a parallel universe, in which Jamie isn't a violent, misogynistic creep, he understands and respects that Katie doesn't reciprocate his romantic interest in her. Being mature enough to accept this outcome, Jamie becomes good friends with Katie, and the two enjoy hanging out and walking home together.

Reality: Mike Smith and Snoop Dogg Filming Trailer Park Boys in 2015

My Imagined Scenario: When the cameras finally stop rolling in Sunnyvale, Bubbles likes to unwind by taking off his glasses, airing out his eyes, cuddling his cats, and smoking a joint or two with his buddy, Snoop.

Reality: Samantha Mathis and John Leguizamo Filming Super Mario Bros. in 1992

My Imagined Scenario: When they're not busy helping Mario save their respective universes from Koopa, Luigi and Daisy's ideal date night is staying in, ordering a pizza, and playing Super Mario World together.

Reality: Marc McClure, Wendie Jo Sperber, and Eric Stoltz Posing for the Famous Back to the Future Photo in 1984

My Imagined Scenario: Unbeknownst to Dave and Linda, the "Marty" they grew up with was erased from the space-time continuum after he altered the events of 1955. Thus, the Marty who returned to 1985 was a completely different person with an equally different taste in fashion.

Reality: Carrie Fisher and David Prowse Posing for a Rolling Stone Photoshoot in 1983

My Imagined Scenario: Lord Vader doesn't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. However, he'll tolerate it for some nice father-daughter bonding time with Leia at the beach.
