In honour of Valentine's Day and the 4th-anniversary of the live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, I thought I'd have a bit of fun by looking back on Sonic's many girlfriends and the games they first appeared in. When it comes to love, Sonic doesn't discriminate, as his relationships span across species and media. Sonic loves rings, but would he ever put one on a girl's finger and settle down? Doubtful, but who knows? Anyway, let's begin...
Madonna, Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic's first girlfriend is a human named Madonna. She was intended to appear in the original Sonic the Hedgehog game but was given the boot before release.
Princess Sally Acorn, Sonic Spinball
Sonic's second girlfriend is a squirrel-chipmunk named Princess Sally. She was the leader of the Freedom Fighters in both the short-lived cartoon and long-running comic. Princess Sally also made a video game cameo in Sonic Spinball and was slated to appear in the cancelled Sonic-16 game.
Amy Rose, Sonic CD
Sonic's third (and current) girlfriend is a fellow hedgehog named Amy Rose. She appears to be the Barbie to Sonic's Ken, appearing across all Sonic media, and the only one of Sonic's girlfriends to become a playable character in his games. Interestingly, Amy was referred to as "Princess Sally" in the North American release of Sonic CD. I'm not sure how Amy feels about that...
Sara, Sonic the Hedgehog (OVA)
Sonic's fourth girlfriend is a human named Sara. She was the President's daughter in the anime film, which means Sonic is a lover of both monarchism and presidentialism. Sara clearly wasn't a damsel in distress, as her toughness and fiery temper made Robotnik's attempts to hold her hostage quite difficult.
Tiara Boobowski, Sonic X-treme
Sonic's fifth girlfriend is a Manx cat named Tiara Boobowski. She was intended to appear as Sonic's playable co-star in the cancelled Sonic X-treme game, sharing Sonic's moveset as well as fighting with a scepter. Tiara would've been portrayed as a strong badass with a similar cool attitude to Sonic. It's a shame Sonic X-treme was never released, as it may have saved the Sega Saturn.
Princess Elise the Third, Sonic '06
Sonic's sixth girlfriend is a human named Princess Elise. She shared a fairy tale kiss with Sonic. Honestly, the less said about Sonic '06, the better. So, moving on...
Chili Dogs
Girlfriends come and go, but Sonic's one true love will always be chili dogs. They're Sonic's absolute favourite food across all his media. These greasy goodies pair well with a side of onion rings, which I'm sure Sonic appreciates.
